Mabrouka Finally Finds Refuge

Mabrouka* has travelled half-way around the world. Her path as a refugee has led her to Ottawa, where she hopes to settle for good with her husband and 4-year old daughter. Her little family is about to grow bigger too. She’s nine-months pregnant and due any day now.

On this warm summer night, Mabrouka sits in the middle of HWF’s operations, waiting to pick up the furniture she’ll be bringing home. She is deeply touched when she looks through the pieces that the HWF staff has put aside for her. “All the heartfelt effort from the staff… It feels like a personal gift!” she says, pointing to the toys and books especially chosen for her daughter. “I can see the thoughtfulness that went into the decision-making behind every little piece.”

Mabrouka is also struck by the strong sense of community of the HWF volunteers on duty that night. She watches them load and unload furniture, help each other and crack jokes. “It is truly inspiring,” she says, already thinking of one day volunteering herself… once she has her house in order and her body back!

Before coming to Ottawa, Mabrouka had hoped she would find a welcoming environment and a good place to raise a family. HWF is proud to deliver on that promise every day, and delighted to count Mabrouka among our growing community.

Update!

Mabrouka gave birth to a healthy son of 7.5 pounds just a week after this summer night. The little family is doing well… and the kids’ bedroom looks great too!
