Our Actions

Thousands of women, men, and children in Ottawa are living without the comfort of a home. They lack beds to sleep in, tables to eat at, and the sense of belonging and security that comes with having a home to call their own. Life for them is simply about surviving - not living and thriving.

HWF has furnished more than 2,400 homes in the Ottawa community and helped over 6,000 people since 2005. But so many deserving people remain on our waitlist. It costs us less than $370.00 to furnish a home completely.

Your donations have an immediate and direct impact on individuals in desperate need of help. All members of HWF are volunteers - we have no paid staff. Donations you make to HWF go directly to covering essential expenses such as gas for the truck, storage, and insurance, all of which help us provide more people the hope of creating a new and dignified life here in Ottawa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Helping with Furniture a registered charity?

Yes. We are a registered Canadian charity and we can give tax receipts. We are also a federally incorporated body and have to comply with all associated laws and regulations. Our charitable tax number authorized by the Canada Revenue Agency is 82450 0615 RR0001.

Does 100% of every dollar I donate go to help families?

Yes. There are no administrative or other deductions taken from each donation that HWF receives.

Can I donate through the United Way Annual Campaign?

If the campaign in your office is coordinated by your organization, the donation form will list a number of agencies that your donation will go to, or that you can select from if you wish it to go to a specific organization rather than be divided amongst them all. Also on the form will be a section where you can write in the name of a charitable organization (and its charitable number) that is not on the list and allocate a part or your entire donation to that organization. If you wish to donate to the work we do, write in "Helping with Furniture" and our charitable number 82450 0615 RR0001. This number is approved and issued by the Canada Revenue Agency.

What are the advantages of using the United Way Campaign for me to give to HWF?

For many people this is an ideal way to give because the campaign occurs annually without any personal work involved. Many people make this their annual contribution to charity because it is simple. And to give to a particular charity like HWF does not mean you have to give more money (unless you want to), it only means allocation of some part of the donation to HWF. You will receive a tax receipt for your annual donation.

Do you give tax receipts for money donations?

Yes. We provide charitable tax receipts for amounts of $25.00 or more. (Except when the donations are made through either the United Way Annual Campaign or through Canada Helps, as noted above, when the receipt is issued by those organizations.)

If I buy something at one of your garage sales or other activities do you give a tax receipt for what I pay you?

No. Under the income tax act we are not allowed to do that.

Can I get a tax receipt for a "Gift in Kind"?

A "Gift in Kind" is any donation that is not money. We are only allowed to give receipts for a gift in kind if it is new and has proof of value or, if it is used, it has to have a written current appraisal by a neutral professional before a receipt can be issued.
